When Kids Ask About The Stars

feature photo

My ten-year-old son once asked me what I want to become when I grow up. I replied, “but I’m already a grown up. What did you mean, exactly?” He then rephrased his question for my sake: “Dad, when you were a kid just like me, what did you want to become?” I told him that I secretly wanted to be an astronaut. I then carried on telling him about my childhood fascination with astronomy and the collections I had of miniature stars and planets that my parents still kept in their garage.

In some way, our talk about astronomy led him to develop the same interest I had about the subject thirty-five years ago. He asked me if I could help him set up a miniature replica of the universe. Sure enough, I had no reason to turn down his request. That same day, we took a trip to the mall to purchase the supplies we’ll need for our father-and-son astronomy project.

  1. It is so wonderful how your kid asked that question. A rhetorical one perceived with such innocence.

  2. Like father, like son. I think you have an astronaut in the making there already. :-) Good luck on the project!

  3. When I was a child I dreamed that I was flying to heaven with the angels and together with the million stars.
